Onychomycosis is a nail infection caused by fungi such as dermatophytes, yeasts and non-dermatophytes. The world prevalence rate is about 5%~15%, and the domestic prevalence rate is between 10%~15%. In densely populated areas such as the military, the incidence rate can reach 50%~60%. The global market size is expected to reach 67.5 billion dollars in 2026. Existed treatment methods are ineffective, time-consuming, and have large side effects, which cause great troubles to health.
Based on atmospheric pressure low-temperature plasma technology, our team developed a plasma onychomycosis treatment instrument, which directly uses high-activity low-temperature plasma generated by gas discharge to treat hands and feet. The early vitro experiment achieved rapid killing of bacteria and fungi on the back of the nail plate within 30 minutes, which reaching 5 orders of magnitude. It’s efficiency exceeded ordinary onychomycosis topical drugs. The human test data in the early stage also showed a very good effect.
Professor Xiong Zilan is one of the earliest researchers in the world to study low-temperature plasma treatment of onychomycosis. Currently, the technology lead the way in the world, which has obtained 1 invention patent, 2 applications, and 3 articles. We want to push this instrument into clinical trials.
